See and Learn
We use a Reading/Communication scheme called ‘See and Learn’ which addresses the different areas of attention, listening, discrimination and production of the sounds that make up speech, building up vocabulary and encouraging recognition of words.
Producing sounds and words involves motor skills, which require motor planning and control, and as with all motor skills, speech skills improve with practice. Working in regular, short sessions gives opportunities for repetition and practice, and to store sounds and words in memories.
Pupils enjoy working with clear photographs and pictures, to help them make connections with recognisable real objects and actions. One to one sessions encourage them to focus and practice their skills. Being able to articulate sounds gives children the confidence to vocalise and speak with their friends. We also use Makaton signs to support understanding and communication of pupils with non verbal means.
